Chapter Events

The Tidewater Chapter is proud to host and/or sponsor several events each year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we expect our offerings through the end of 2020 to take place as pre-recorded events and made available to our membership and friends on YouTube and our website. In this way, we hope you will be able to participate with us in the comfort of your home and office.

The offerings for February and March of 2021 will be offered virtually as well, but if we are permitted face-to-face workshop gatherings with safe protocols in place, we will hope to have these events in person.

September 27, 2020 Virtual Officer Installation Service ~ 4:00pm

The virtual service for the installation of our AGO officers will include organ music and hymns, the liturgy of installation, and a short reflection about music and worship. The service will be pre-recorded at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Hampton.

December 13, 2020Members Recital ~ 4pm

The recital of the five Tidewater AGO organists who have served and are currently serving at Monumental United Methodist Church in Portsmouth celebrates the restoration of the church’s Casavant organ after a fire in the sanctuary. It will also serve as the annual Christmas concert offered by Monumental for the community, and will include music of the Christmas and Advent season. This program was originally scheduled for March 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic, and will be pre-recorded and available online.

February 6, 2021Organ Music by African-American Composers ~ 10am

Dr. Roy Belfield, organist and music director at Hampton Baptist Church and accompanist for the I. Sherman Green Chorale, will introduce music compositions by African-American composers past and present. This event was recorded at Ghent UMC, Norfolk, and is available on our YouTube channel.

March 13, 2021 – Organ Music by Women Composers ~ 10:30am

This workshop, offered during Women’s History Month, will feature four Tidewater AGO member organists presenting five of their favorite organ pieces written by women composers past and present. The program will be held socially-distanced in person and also livestreamed to our YouTube channel.

May 2021 – The Organ Swell concert series
This annual series features six organ recitals in various Tidewater locations showcasing the organs of the area. Each program includes a professional instrumentalist joining to offer music for organ and instruments. This year’s series will be an entirely virtual event, and the schedule and series information can be found here.
